East London Liquor Company

East London Liquor

Going to post about something a bit different today. The other week I was supposed to be going to see Slipknot in Sheffield (my inner mosher just has to come out from time to time) but, due to not really being able to afford another trip up north as I’d been up the weekend before for a friend’s wedding, and due to suffering from a bit of burn out, I sold my ticket. This did mean that I had half a day booked off work already though, and rather than put it to waste I took up the opportunity of popping along to a Gin Experience at the East London Liquor Company. It was a great chance for me to learn a bit more about a very good independent distillery and also to do a bit of networking.

We were taken around by distiller Tom Hill, who was a self-professed science enthusiast, who talked us through the history of Gin (why it’s popular in the UK, the reasons behind “mother’s ruin” etc) as well as the process which they undertake when distilling their gins (as well as the vodka and a whiskey which they hope to have on the shelves in approximately 3 years).  They are one of the only small distilleries in London to bottle their own spirits, with a bottle machine set up specially for their bespoke bottles and labels.

Before we got to tasting we popped into their bottle store, which was very well stocked. From gins through to whisky, beer and bitters. They have a number of their own special limited run gins (like their two collaborations with Transport For London, for the DesignJunction pop up restaurant) as well as imports from around the globe.

Afterwards we got to try the core spirits which the East London Liquor company makes, their Vodka, and 3 Gins.  The house Small Batch Vodka and London Dry Gin both come in bottles specifically designed for speed of service (long necks so they can be grabbed from speed rails with ease), and both are designed to mix well, although both are very drinkable straight (more than can be said for many “house” spirits).  They had originally planned on making two gins, a premium and a house, but after taste testing they ended up deciding on three distinctly different gins. The two premium gins, known as Batch 1 and Batch 2, with Batch 1 being more floral containing Pink Grapefruit, Cubeb Berries and Darjeeling tea (less keen on this one, too sweet for my gin tastes) and Batch 2 being a more savoury affair with fennel seeds, sage and lemon peel at its core (I love this one).

They also allowed us to try a couple of the other gins and rums they have in stock. Including a barrel aged gin, that was slightly peaty. Not sure how I felt on that one. All in all I’d highly recommend popping down. They are a great group of guys running an excellent distillery and producing some very good spirits. 2015 Goals

2014 bought about a fair bit of change and adventure for me. With a move from “North” (Yorkshire) to “South” (London) finally taking place, trips to Chicago, Belgium & Mull and various mini adventures and escapades along the way it was all together a fairly successful year. So I’m going to set myself some targets for 2015. Some of these may come across as modest, but that is, in part, down to having such an extravagant 2014 and my wallet needing some downtime.

  1. Learn to bake

Cinnamon Buns
Yup, you read that right. Twice every year I get people badgering me to enter The Breat British Bake Off (GBBO), when it airs and when they accept entries, and every time I say the same thing; “I’m just not good enough. I don’t have the basic technical knowledge required.” Etc. I’m also very good at following a recipe, or adapting a recipe, but I wouldn’t say I could just make one up or wing it too successfully (I can to a point, but not as much as I personally would like).

So, this means I am going to spend some time this year teaching myself the basics. What makes a good cake, and why? How to make pastry, of all different kinds, pies and the like. And so on and so forth. This also means I’ll be documenting my adventures.

  1. Learn how to use my camera

DSC_0530
You guessed it, there’s a theme here, I want to better myself. I have a Nikon D70s which I inherited from my dad when he upgraded a few years ago. I have a couple of good lenses, and I can take a passable snap. I want to take GOOD photos though. This year I fully intend to step my game up and teach myself just how to use the camera I’ve been heavy-handedly using for the last few years. I’ve been recommended Plate to Pixel and I’m going to give that a go.

  1. Sort out my financial situation.

It stinks; I want it not to stink. This means an actual budget. I have plans in place to get this sorted, which I’ll share if they are successful.

  1. Sell my bakes

I’ve been wanting to do this for ages. As I knew I’d likely be leaving Leeds it wasn’t really going to happen there. I’ve been thinking about ways of doing it, from doing bespoke orders all the way through to having my own stall. I’m currently wanting to look in to setting up a market stall somewhere in London at one of the weekend markets.

This is one I’d love some help with. If anyone has any suggestions on how to go about it, from set up, to places or even just business help/advice that’d be amazing.

  1. Get to a better fitness level.

Cor, check out that belly (this was when I was in better shape, using better loosely)

Ah, the standard one you’ll see everywhere. This isn’t an “oh my god I wanna lose 50lbs” it’s more of an “I don’t wanna get out of breath climbing the stairs”. I was doing pretty well last year before I got derailed by life things happening, and I want to get back to it.

These will all go along with other lifestyle changes that I’ll be looking to make throughout the year. What are your goals for 2015? Do you have anything to say or a way you could help me with mine?

Goodbye York

I’ve just returned from a few days on Mull for New Year, and I’m bedridden with a bug which I think I’ve caught from one of my friends (damn you, Conor. And sorry Tim for passing it on further). This means my productive day before returning to work on Monday hasn’t been given much of a chance. I can at least do something, so meal planning and writing up a blog post or two it is. Please excuse the photo quality of some of these as a number are very, very, old and taken with a bog standard digital camera or phone.

Appleton Roebuck

This weekend, my parents are moving. They leave behind the house in York which I have called home for the last 16 years. It’s the longest I’ve ever been able to call somewhere home (we moved around a lot in my youth, and since moving out I’ve not stayed in one house for all that long). I said my goodbyes to the house earlier in the week, when I stopped in on my way from Devon up to Scotland. My parents were starting their packing which I believe has been a tad stressful. My mother starts her new job on the isle of Mull on Monday, so she moves into their new home today, with my father following in the coming days. I wish them all the best with their move and have every faith in it being a success. Oh and if you’re reading this ma/pa; GET A DOG PLEASE, thanks.

Appleton Roeuck

The house in Appleton Roebuck saw me through my teenage years, which were mixed at best. I was bullied for much of secondary school and the house was a bit of a refuge. But the positives; I remember the first time I kissed a girl on the couch, the parties (sorry mum and dad), playing football in the garden, climbing the hedges & trees, whinging about being made to go on walks to Bolton Percy (that’s changed now, I love walking), having to live in temporary accommodation for a few weeks while the extension was built (and the bathroom that my dad started refurbishing but stalled halfway through for several years), bike rides to Bolton Percy or around Acaster Selby… the list just goes on really.

Cobweb

I often complain about York (I found the city a bit of a drag to live in, I mean sure, it’s pretty, but it’s a bit boring), but if I’m honest, I’ll miss being able to call the place home. So long York, I’ll likely be in you a whole heap less now (apart from when visiting my sister), I’ll miss you and your quaint streets.

2014 – In Review

How on earth is it already the end of 2014? It’s been a pretty mixed year. Started a bit low but had some real highlights. Including (but not limited to) taking my friends to Mull for the first time, my sister getting married, Chicago, Groezrock & moving to London (at last). It’s been pretty damn busy to say the least. I’ve made a lot of new friends, and got closer to old ones. I saw my sister walk down the aisle and was her new husband’s groomsmen. I baked a serious amount of cake. Averaging more than once a week.

Below are some visual highlights from a year in the life of a beard.

I’m going to end it there and stop myself from moving on to things you really don’t care about. I could easily go on to list stuff like my top 5 burgers, top 5 wrestling moments and things along those lines. But the majority of you are only here for cake, so even the music was probably a bit far.

Bring on 2015! I’ll be seeing it in on Mull with some friends, what are you doing? And tell me some of your best moments from 2014.

Fifteen Festive Favourites

It’s Christmas next week and I feel a bit bad about my lack of Christmas posts. I’m aiming to get a bit more up over the weekend, anyone say chocolate sleigh? Or Yule Log? But anyway I was tagged by Sybil across at Gin Fuelled Blue Stockings for 15 Christmas facts.

01. Favourite Festive Food
Far too easy, I remember being a kid and discovering Pigs in Blankets and it shattering my world. I could probably just have a Christmas dinner consisting of them and gravy and I’d be happy. As far as the favourite thing I make it’d probably be Cranberry & Orange Loaves though.

02. Favourite Reindeer
Blitzen, I haven’t really got a reason for this, it’s just a pretty good name. Plus why not route for the bad guy this Christmas, they always get such a hard time of it with all these soppy Christmas movies. I can’t say this is something I’ve ever particularly thought about

03. Favourite Day of Christmas
Boxing day, we usually go on a walk around wherever it is we are spending Christmas. This ranges from a stroll down the lane if it’s in Appleton Roebuck or a proper hike if we’re somewhere like Scotland. Plus you get the leftover Pigs in Blankets, what’s not to like? Also football is on, so it gives me something to watch that isn’t just Christmas tele.

04. Favourite Christmas Song
Ah, this one is an easy one. Reuben – Christmas is Awesome

05. Favourite Present
There are three here, from very different times of my life:
• The first would be my old mountain bike. It was a Giant, white with those pointless antler type handlebars that every kid wanted. 21 gears and everything. The use I got out of that in my youth was huge. I loved it. It’s still kicking about in my parent’s shed actually. I think it’ll be going in the move unfortunately.
• My Kenwood food mixer. Other than the above mentioned bike I’m not sure if a present I’ve received has ever had so much use. I use this thing 2-3 times a week, sometimes more. It’s fuckin’ brilliant and I couldn’t be more grateful for it. Gone are the days where I have to whisk to a stiff peak by hand. It may not be a Kitchenaid but it doesn’t have to be and I love it.
• My “The Bearded Bakery” apron & Mug from last Christmas. My Mum did this unprompted and it made me so happy. The original apron disappeared during the year but my friend Katie helped me sort a new one before the shoot we did earlier this year.

06. Favourite Festive Film
Die Hard. What says Christmas better than “Now I have a machine gun, Ho-Ho-Ho.”? It’s a masterpiece, from start to finish. From the cheesy Germanic bad guys to Rickman pretending to be a civilian. It’s just pure cheesy action filled with one liners and ridiculous clichéd action.
Definitely not Elf. No.
My runners up: Muppet Christmas Carol, Arthur Christmas and Home Alone.

07. Favourite Festive Cracker Toy
Bottle openers, they help me with the booze situation on Christmas day and mean I’ve not got to walk over to the kitchen to get an opener. I can just sit there getting more and more full and a little bit drunker while watching Lord of the Rings for the millionth time.

08. Favourite Cracker Joke
Who hides in the bakery at Christmas? – A Mince Spy

09. Favourite Christmas Decoration
I am not in the slightest religious. In fact I can say I am an out and out atheist that spends time discussing with people he knows about atheism and science etc. However, possibly my favourite Christmas decoration is the nativity set that my Grandfather made our family. This is purely for sentimental and nostalgic reason.

10. Favourite Christmas Candle Scent
The one I’m currently using, which is a Cinnamon Bun scented candle. I do however really like the winter spiced ones you can get at this time of year.

11. Favourite Christmas TV Advert
There isn’t a lot I can say here. Adverts aren’t particularly things I go crazy for. So I’m going to say none of them, soz Grinch.

12. Favourite Festive Tradition
Getting up at about 6am to get the Turkey ready with my dad. He used to do it on his own but these days I usually help him (if we are having Turkey, we’ve mixed it up on the odd occasion lately. For instance we had Goose when we Christmassed in Vienna). He’s got an exact recipe that he likes to use every year, from a Gary Rhodes or Delia book he read back in the 90s and it requires wrapping in various layers of foil, sort of like a parcel and then cooking it over a number of hours.
Yup, that’s right my favourite tradition for Christmas involves getting up ridiculously early. I am mad, I know this. Unfortunately we won’t be doing it this year as we are having a big family get together in Devon and we’re only in charge of starters and desserts.

13. Favourite Place to Spend Christmas
Mull. Only done it once (so far) but I really enjoyed it. I can safely say that I go on about Scotland and Mull far, far, too much but it’s just wonderful. Getting to the middle of nowhere for a bit and really switching off is just the best way to spend Christmas. Even if like last year, it’s in the middle of a storm. With my parents moving to Mull at the start of January I’m expecting to be spending a larger number up there and I can’t wait.

14. Favourite Christmas Fact
John McClane is actually Father Christmas.

15. Favourite Snowman Accessory
Scarf. Which is odd as neither of the scarfs I own are ones that I actually wear. I just think a snowman looks better with one.

I hope you enjoyed this completely inane ramble. I now tag:
