Travel Diaries: Glasgow April 2016

Botanical Garden

Hey, guess where I went recently? SCOTLAND! AGAIN! It’s almost like I love the place or something. This time around I was taking my girlfriend up to meet the parents for the first time and, as they live on an island at the other end of the country, it’s a pretty big deal which requires some proper planning. We chose the Easter weekend so we could make the most of our holiday days, because hey, free days off are handy, and this time I decided I was fed up of just “passing through” Glasgow every time I headed north. I wanted to give it a couple of days to try and sell itself to me. We booked early flights up on a morning and an early train out to Oban a couple of days later so we could make the most of the timings of the trip.

Isle of Mull – New Years 2015

If you saw my photo diary of Christmas on the Isle of Mull you’ll know I spent the entire festive period on the island. After my parent’s left my friends came up to visit and we spent a few days walking, drinking and eating. Below are a few snaps I took, with the odd one taken by my friends (mainly the group shots). I’m going up again in March, and you can see previous posts about Scotland and the island here, but for now, enjoy my photos from New Years. As ever, more photos are available on my flickr:

Isle of Mull – Christmas 2015

At Christmas I took a trip to see my parents in Scotland again, you can see snaps from previous visits here and check out general Scotland rambles here. For the uninitiated; my parents live on the Isle of Mull and I absolutely fuckin’ love it there. This is part one of a two part series, and concentrates on the days over Christmas, before my friends came up for New Years. That will be following after I finally get around to doing my first recipe post of the year.

The Wye Valley & Sweet Potato Pie

Tintern BridgeIt’s dark outside, and cold. I’ve not been getting enough fresh air at all. So a chance to get away for a weekend to the outdoors was just too good to pass up. We’d been looking around for somewhere to stay and needed something that was manageable from London in the time we had and we’d been looking at too many things on both Tumblr and Pinterest that meant we didn’t just want your standard “room” or “cottage”. Our criteria were along the lines of “cute”, “rustic” etc and we wanted a cabin in the woods. After trawling through various sites and a whole heap of “glamping” type places that offered accommodation that was alright, I guess, but next door to about 20 of the same thing with them all about 2 metres apart, we eventually found a “shepherds hut” at a little place in Wales. The hut in question was in the grounds of the Kingstone Brewery in Tintern, Wales. We were in luck, it was just a couple of hours drive away and the hut itself (especially at this time of year) was private. It had its own cabin next door with a lounge area, kitchen, bathroom etc and the hut itself had a bed.

My Love Affair With Edinburgh

I’ve been to Edinburgh a few times over the years. It’s always been one of those places I’ve said “you know what, I fancy living there”. This last time around, just last week (after my visit to Mull), I was there on my own. Walking around the streets, exploring new eateries, coffee shops and generally just immersing myself in the city, made me realise that I don’t just fancy it, I’m going to have to do it. If I don’t end up abroad, then at some point in the next year or two, I’m gonna pack my things up (again) and move north of the border to Scotland.
